October 30, 2023 – update on the CZM Coastal Resiliency Grant – Beach Nourishment (Town of Marshfield)

The Towns of Marshfield and Duxbury were recently awarded Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Coastal Resiliency (CR) grants totaling 3.2 million dollars to construct a beach nourishment project along the Bay Avenue and Gurnet Road beaches in both towns.  The grant monies will be used to place approximately 25 to 35% of the total volume of sediment planned for the project.  Additional grant funding will be sought in future years for the placement of additional material.  Construction is expected to begin in mid-December 2023 and will continue through the end of March 2024.  Sediment will be imported to the site via trucks with beach access points located at the Bay Avenue ramp and the northern end of the Duxbury Beach Reservation (DBR) property.  End dump tractor trailers will be used to place the nourishment material along the beach and front end loaders will grade the material to match the engineering design.  Questions can be directed to Greg Guimond at the Planning Department in Marshfield (gguimond@townofmarshfield.org) or Sheila Sgarzi at the Department of Public Works in Duxbury (ssgarzi@duxbury-ma.gov).

June 14, 2023 – update on the CZM Coastal Resiliency Grant – Beach Nourishment (Town of Marshfield)

Woods Hole Group, acting on behalf of the Towns of Duxbury and Marshfield, is wrapping up the permitting requirements for Beach and Dune Nourishment for Marshfield, which includes Rexhame Public Beach, Winslow Avenue Town Beach and along Bay Avenue in Green Harbor and along Bay Avenue and Gurnet Road in Duxbury. All necessary permits from the local and state agencies have been issued, and the towns are awaiting issuance of the final permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers. In addition, Woods Hole Group and the Towns are preparing to file with Coastal Zone Management (CZM) separate grant applications that would be used to fund the first phase of installing beach nourishment material (sand-coble mix) along the beach in the Bay Avenue area in both Marshfield and Duxbury. The Marshfield grant application ($1 million) would provide 55% by volume of the designed nourishment project. The Duxbury grant application ($2 million) would provide for 25% by volume of the designed nourishment project. If the Towns are successful in obtaining the grants, construction of the nourishment projects would take place this winter.

February 2, 2022 - Update on the CZM Coastal Resiliency Grant – Beach Nourishment (Town of Marshfield)

Woods Hole Group, acting on behalf of the Town of Marshfield, recently filed the Notice of Intent Application (NOI) for the proposed Beach and Dune Nourishment for Rexhame Public Beach, Winslow Avenue Town Beach and along Bay Avenue in Green Harbor. This is an important step in the process of having permits in place in order to receive beach nourishment at these locations as it becomes available in the future. The Town would like to thank the residents of Bay Avenue in Green Harbor for organizing and getting the final easement documents back to the Town.

The grant/study originally included Fieldston and Sunrise beaches as well. However, the Fieldston and Sunrise Beach area was not filed as part of this permitting application because not all of the beach nourishment easements the Town needs have been returned (only 55% of the easements in the Fieldston and Sunrise beach area have been received). Easements are needed for the properties directly on the seawall from Rexhame Road south to Brook Street.

Even though the deadline (October 1, 2021) for submitting easements has passed and the required permitting is already underway, we will still accept signed beach easements for the Fieldston and Sunrise beaches. Without the signed easements the Town cannot file for beach nourishment permits and cannot proceed with beach nourishment.

If you have your signed easement but forgot to submit it or haven’t got it notarized bring it to Town Hall and the Town Clerk can notarize it. If you have misplaced your easement form you can get forms at https://www.marshfield-ma.gov/planning-department/files/town-marshfield-... or stop by at Town Hall.

Easement Forms will be available at the Planning Office, Town Clerk’s Office and the Select Board Office.  In the future, if all the beach nourishments easements are received by the Town, there may be an opportunity to amended or file a new NOI for the Fieldston and Sunrise beaches.

Thank you, if you have already submitted your easement.
