Tips for a Safe and Happy 4th of July

A Busy Time for Firefighters and Police Officers

The Fourth of July is a busy time for first responders. They will be patrolling beach areas while responding to a surge in emergency call volume. The week of July 4th is one of the busiest times of the year for fires. Firefighters, police officers, and medical professionals ask you to help us. Leave fireworks to the professionals!

Beach Fires

No fires shall be built on any beach area including the dunes in the Town of Marshfield without an authorized permit from the Fire Department. A Fire Permit shall be restricted to cookouts using charcoal or bottled gas (propane) as fuel. Burning wood or other combustible products is strictly prohibited.  Permit holders are responsible for cleaning and restoration of the fire area.

Don’t Forget Your Pets!

The following precautions are recommended by American Humane:

  • Leave pets at home if attending a fireworks display. Keep them inside, shielded from loud noises. Keep the windows closed and draw the shades to minimize the sound and flashes of light.
  • If loud noises upset your pets, do not leave them alone while out celebrating; make sure someone can stay with them. If you’re home, act calm and give them reassuring pets and hugs. Animals look to their caregivers to see how they are reacting.
  • If you think your pets should be tranquilized, consult your veterinarian well in advance.
  • Contact an animal behaviorist to work with your pets on their fears. Positive reinforcement and behavior modification training can help.
  • Be sure all ID tags are properly affixed to pet collars and have your current contact information, including cell number(s).
  • Update microchip registrations and pet license information to ensure they’re current.
